When we lived in Pennsylvania, we would take road trips ALL the time. Whether it was to DC, NYC, or the sunny Carolinas, we lived for those road trips. I am SO glad we can continue our road trip tradition while living in the UK. Daniel had a football match in Greenock Scotland on Monday, so we woke up bright and early to make the 3 hour drive. I didn't take many pictures, because I just wanted to enjoy the trip, but it was such a beautiful drive. Rolling green hills, snow covered mountains, winding rivers through green pastures. Those pictures I took are from when we were at the field, which was right next to the bay. After the game we went to Toby Carvery, and got a ton of meat and veg for way cheap and it was amazing! And those Yorkshire puddings…giant!

Food in England part 1
People who don't live in England have probably heard someone say at one point or another how gross English food is. It's not entirely true. While there are some foods that taste pretty weird, there are some dang good tasting foods too! Here are just a few that we have tried since living here.

Banoffee Pie, aka HEAVEN!!
Basically it is a pie with carmel/dulce de leche mixed with bananas, whip cream, and chocolate on top. It is very rich and very sweet. The first time we ate it was here when we went to the Newcastle match with some friends from church. I had two slices and Daniel had three! Hands down one of our favorite desserts now. It is really popular in England, but everyone keeps telling me they think it's an American dish. This may be true, but I had never even heard of it in America, so I consider it an English dish! Seriously though, you haven't lived until you have tried this pie. For some reason, sweets taste 100x better in the UK.
Yorkshire pudding. (pronounced york shur)
People usually eat these with their "sunday roasts." Since they have the shape of a bowl, you pour gravy, mashed potatoes, or whatever you want into them. We love these! They are so so good smothered in hot gravy. They are basically like a pancake batter, cooked in muffin tins. Some people even eat them with sweet things inside as a dessert.
Curry.
This may sound weird, but Indian food is probably the most popular food here! There are way more Indian restaurants than any other kind. Believe it or not I had never tried curry before coming to England! One of our first days here we had it at a pub (most pubs have it on their menus) and we loved it. I have home-made it a few times making up my own recipe, and it turned out pretty good! It's an easy dish to make.
Fish n Chips.
England's pride and joy. We are lucky to live in the north where fish n chips are considered the best in the UK. Belle's Fish n Chips is a popular chain here, and there is one called The Codfather (hehe) down the street from our flat (which makes it WAY too easy to eat there). This picture doesn't do it justice, but when you ask for cod n chips, they plop a full on fried fish onto your plate, with thick and fresh cut chips. To finish it off you HAVE to smother it in vinegar and salt. To not to would be a sin. A lot of people here like to eat their fish n chips with a big side of mushy peas. Haven't tried that one yet!
The fish n chips here are by far the best we've ever had. Even if I feel like I need a proper shower after eating them!
That's all the food for this post. Stay tuned for Part 2!
Note: I put the links to where I found these pictures underneath each one. I have not tried these recipes, I was just giving credit for the pictures.

A Fresh Start
The first picture I think shows English fashion perfectly! Love it. I also am obsessed with the street performers here in Durham..and this guy in the last pic sounded exactly like Johnny Cash. Anyways.. In December we found out our flat that I previously did a post about here was infested with what I like to call, the 3 M's…Mold, Mice, and My neighbor's poo. Around our front and back door we had a serious mold problem, and I would spend everyday scrubbing the mold off with all sorts of different concoctions that never worked. We knew it wasn't good for us to be inhaling those awful spores everyday. A few days before Christmas I walked into the kitchen at night to get a drink of water, and I flip on the light and lo and behold a furry creature scurried underneath our washer. I don't know what it is about us and weird creatures in our apartments, but we have had a variety of animals inhabit our homes including frogs in our bathroom and growling voles (a mole/mouse like thing) in our ceiling while living in Pennsylvania. Guess they just like us or something! A few days after Christmas Daniel and I were watching a movie on Netflix, and I smelled something awful, and blamed it on him. He insisted it wasn't him and went off to search for the source of the smell. He opened the bathroom door to see about 2 inches of sewage in our bathtub! How lovely! We moved out the next day.
Our new place has a SHOWER. I don't know how we went so long just taking baths. No Mice! No Mold! (ok maybe a little, but that's just England for ya!) I am so grateful for this little fresh start and new flat. And for showers! Long glorious showers.

Two Words
If someone told me to describe northern England in two words, they would be: Sheep & hills. Everywhere you look in the countryside, you will most likely always see these two things.

Thursday Afternoon
Can you believe there are berries and blossoms on the trees here?! I almost died when I walked to the park today and saw them. The weather here is SO weird. We haven't gotten any snow this year, and the temperature holds a steady 45 degreesF every day! It's such a mild winter, and the summers are mild too. The only downside is we only have daylight from 9am to 3pm, and it rains all the time. My heart goes out to all our Pennsylvania friends who are in the middle of some crazy cold weather right now!! I can't even imagine. I am welcoming this early spring-like weather with open arms, but I sure do miss those fun snow days with my brothers back in Idaho!

| New Year's Eve 2013 |
There are so many things to write about 2013, I wouldn't know where to start. It was an awesome year to say the least, filled with ups and downs, and plenty adventures. It is going to be hard to top it! But I have high hopes for 2014, and we are going to make it the most adventurous yet!
New years eve with our ward was a blast. Probably the most fun we have had in a while! Our ward is like one big family, we are SO lucky to be a part of it! At the party we had a projector and a screen so we could watch Big Ben strike 12 and see the incredible firework show over London. It was a great way to end the year, and a great start to the new year.
We love you already, 2014!
